Knowledge is power

In a guest column in The Independent titled 'Illegal immigration a grave threat to the United States', Deputy Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger enlightens the rest of us: "Gang activity and violence among illegal immigrants is also reaching crisis proportions. Some of the most notorious gangs of illegal immigrants and their progeny include SOK (Still Out Killing), HTO (Hispanics Taking Over), and JMC (Just Mobbing Crazy), to name a few."

Gosh, where would we all be without the jingoist, Christmas-saving superpowers of Gerry Scharfenberger? Why, our kids might grow up not properly fearing brown people. [/end sarcasm]

I never thought I'd be saying this, but can we go back to the time when Peter Carton could actually shut his half-wit lackeys up?

I'm not of the wide-open-borders contingent, I'm just of the being-a-municipal-officeholder-does-not-qualify-you-as-an-immigration-expert (unless you're Anna Little) set. Please, please, please work on the issues that are actually relevant to your office, not pet peeves like trans fats, over-stuffed geese or illegal immigration.

I must congradulate you for a very progressive and appropriate posting.
G. Scharfenberger is a typical right-wing racist. Like the «Know Nothings» of the past, he plays upon the masses' fear of the unknown, in this case, fear of the brown man. Like the Know Nothings, people with ideas like G. Scharfenberger will too become a thing of the past.
I can only hopt that day comes very soon.

Jackie, you can do better than this! The fact that the Big Professor commends this post should make that crystal clear.
I read the Scharfenberger column and found it pretty factual and grounded. Whether he's an "immigration expert" or not is irrelevant. Whether he is a deputy mayor or not is irrelevant. As a citizen, he is entitled to express his opinion on any issue, even if it falls beyond the realm of Middletown government and politics.
I have actually been considering doing a post on illegal immigration in my blog. Like prostitution and human trafficking, it is an issue that is very germane to Monmouth County; just take a ride past the Red Bank train station or down Broad and Throckmorton Streets in Freehold.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Every Thanksgiving my family, as does yours, gathers around a big table and gives thanks for all that we have. Monmouth County is an area of great abundance, both in material things and in our people. We live in a time of great prosperity and freedom.

I ask you to remember in your thoughts two groups at this time. Those less fortunate then we are, and please what you can for them. And our brave men and women of our military forces around the world and their families, who make it possible for us to live our lives.

We have all been blessed with many things, but most importantly, he has given us our families, our friends and each other.

I wish you, your family and your friends, a very Happy Thanksgiving.
